PUBLIC INPUT SOUGHT FOR
TOMPKINS COUNTY COMPREHENSIVE PLAN

How can we make Tompkins County a place where:

  • Economic prosperity is accessible to all?
  • Natural features and working rural landscapes are preserved and enhanced?
  • The entire community is prepared for the economic, environmental, and social impacts of climate change?
  • The built environment promotes safety and daily physical activity?

Still Life with Calving Iceberg

By Maria Driscoll McMahon

“Still Life with Calving Iceberg” is an installation incorporating sculpture and drawing which explores the adolescent condition and identity formation through a central metaphor taken from the natural world: an iceberg that is falling apart, or “calving,” evoking not only catastrophic environmental destruction, but through a metaphor within a metaphor, a baby animal domesticated almost exclusively in rural areas.

One million images of the inhabitants of a threatened ecosystem

endangered-gorillasHuffington Post reports that the wildlife camera trap network from TEAM has captured its one millionth animal photo. TEAM, or Tropical Ecology Assessment & Monitoring Network works to provide comprehensive, real-time data about our world’s remaining forests.

If you too care about our world’s forests and their residents, please, help stop deforestation. Go vegan, reduce/reuse/recycle/repair, and try to reduce your negative impact on the environment. You might not save the forest all by yourself, but you’ll know you tried to help. As Albert Einstein said,

A human being is a part of the whole, called by us the ‘Universe,’ a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings, as something separate from the rest — a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty. Nobody is able to achieve this completely, but the striving for such achievement is in itself a part of the liberation and a foundation for inner security.”

The Local Affects the Global

Vegans who care deeply about animal rights often come to realize that our choices for animals shouldn’t be limited to what we put on our plates – every action we take has an impact, sometimes too far away for us to see or fully understand, without educating ourselves.

Read this article: 10,000 Walruses Forced Ashore In Alaska – the world is changing because of our actions, and the other animals we share this planet with are going to keep losing their ability to survive the changes.
